LITS 2502 Poster Project

When you have completed and presented your group project, tell us if you think for you and/or your partner(s) the objectives (outlined in the given instructions with respect to acquisition of knowledge, fostering of cooperative skills, etcetera) were achieved? Was it a worthwhile endeavour, and why or why not?

  1. I cannot speak for my partner - only for myself. I think that the objectives outlined were achieved. I learnt more about Rhys than I had ever known or would have known if we did not do the research. Also, though I am not a fan of group projects,I understand their purpose and what can be achieved when a group is functional. Tiniyl and I had to share ideas and make compromises to ensure that the work load was not only shared but that our work would adequately express what we wanted to convey. The last objective outlined which was geared towards increasing our oral competence is very important. A student of Literature MUST be able to command an audience and make his/her points clearly. I am an advocate for oral presentations because it gives the speaker a chance to explain aloud, that which he/she would have gathered from their research. Sometimes you may even be shocked to realize how much you actually did learn and your competence in the subject. Good luck to the other presenters next week.

  2. First of all, this assignment was very creative and different. This was the first assignment that I have done in U.W.I which enabled me to actually create something and I got a chance to improve my computer skills on Microsoft Publisher which I never knew existed until now.
I am also not a huge fan of group presentations, I prefer to accomplish my work individually but as the saying goes, 'two hands are better than one.' My group partner, Josi-Ann and I collaborated on the oral presentation and I think it turned out well.
This particular poster project was a learning experience. I learnt a great deal about the poet which we presented on, Lorna Goodison through the various criticism written about her and also the interviews that people conducted with her. I gained new information about this poet and I will definitely read her memoir, Harvey River in my spare time. There were some unfortunate incidents which occurred but it caused me to realize that every aspect of life has it's ups and downs and each of us are different and imperfect and I respect that.
The second objective aimed towards the development of oral and written forms of expression. Honestly, oral presentations are my weak elements of courses because I'm shy and I tend to get nervous but for this presentation I felt relaxed and I feel contented about this. Overall, this experience was definitely worthwhile. I also loved all the presentations and posters which I have seen, they were excellent.

  3. I think the objectives outlined for this poster presentation were generally met. Shelly and I made a good collaborative team and the outcome was favourable.Going into this project, my knowledge of Goodison's work was very limited since I have only been exposed to ONE of her poetry collections once before *hides face in shame* I was clueless to the fact that she was a short story writer. Nevertheless, through research I was able to expand my knowledge and gain more insight into her life, influences and her work in general.

Overall, working on creating this poster image was a good experience and the outcome was as good as could be expected. It was worthwhile in terms of the knowledge obtained through research and the finished product of the poster image but I think that it could have been an individual assignment and turned out just as well.

  4. Group assignments are always great for practicing grou dynamics in prparation for the work place. For this assignment I enjoyed working with my partner, Dhannika she is always fun to work with. The poster allowed for creative possibilities of any kind to be generated as well as for research to be done further on the author choosen.Biographical information as well as information about the works of the authors helped me to understand why particular themes and issues were presented in their works and by extension the contribution to Carribbean Women Writing. Presenting in the tutorial sessions allowed for closer interaction and discussion amongst peers which I found to be a great experience. Lastly the objectives were clearly outlined which made it easier to know what had to be done for presentation.

  5. The objectives were met by my partner and I. It was a nice experience working with her because we work well together, and we both contributed evenly. It was an informative exercise because we both learnt more about Jean Rhys and her works. Also, the experiences she encountered, what influenced her writing and the messages she wanted to convey through that. Also, by the other presentations I learned more about writers such as Lorna Goodison. It was an overall informative experience and I enjoyed it

  6. First of all I would just like to brag about having the best partner in the class! Oswyn Johnson, is always a delight to work with, and I was very happy when he agreed to work with me.

I think in many ways our group has fulfilled the criteria with respect to the assignment, and I am basing this on the response we got after our presentation. I really enjoyed working on this particular assignment, because it was quite different to the regular oral presentation. I think it helped to give us a chance to exercise our creativity skills and for that it didn’t seem like work at all, just a lot of fun!
Being a group presentation, it helped to lighten the work load- so that was a plus, and I liked most that the question was tailored in such a way, that it allowed flexibility with respect to the answer, meaning, we were allowed to choose which aspects of the life and work of the author we found relevant or interesting.
Truth be told, even though I met Olive Senior’s work prior to this course, I hadn’t realized how much I had learnt until we sat down to brainstorm ideas with respect to the design, which being in final year is a really great feeling. All in all, I enjoyed this assignment! It was fun, I enjoyed working with my partner and was quite satisfied with our work!

  7. I really do believe we (Lynette and I)achieved the intented objectives intended. While there were a few hiccups here and there with time constraints (two part-time students, so....) We eventually did get it together and produced what I believe was the best Zee Edgell poster (sorry Dexter lol)I am glad, like Nadja said, that "... the question was tailored in such a way, that it allowed flexibility with respect to the answer..." because that made me actually really think and use what little artistic flair I have to come up with the poster format we used. All in all I very much enjoyed the experience, it was a welcome change from the monotony of U.W.I presentations.

  8. This poster presentation was a wonderful artistic re- awakening for me as I remembered how much patience and dedication art involves. This project opened up my eyes to another dimension of creative presentation and I look forward to incorporating visual techniques such as professional poster presentations in my future. The preparation of the presentation was quite smooth for both Amelia and I, as we sort of meshed efficiently in what we had to accomplish and our ideas flowed easily. The presentation gave me more appreciation for the life and work of Jean Rhys and I think we made a good team. After seeing the other posters, I admit ours seem less professional but as a mother sees the greatness in her child, I am so very proud of our poster that I could not donate it. We agreed that I would keep it and every morning I look at it on my wall and it reminds me of the creativity that still exists. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to remember this.

  9. In my opinion, my partner (Sylvern) and I were successful in executing the criteria outlined for this in-course assignment. I believe it was a worthwhile endeavour for as Devon said “…it was a welcome change from the monotony of U.W.I presentations”. This assignment gave us, the group and by extension the class an opportunity to explore our more artistic side. In addition, by listening to the presentations, done by other groups, I was able to learn facts I would not have been exposed to previously or would have failed to acknowledge. The experience of working with Sylvern was a good one and I believe the intent that Dr. Skeete had with regard to giving an assignment such as this was fulfilled.

  10. Kathleen and I certainly got to learn more about Lorna Goodison than we had previously known. Also, we had the opportunity to develop greater confidence and our oral and creative skills from this exercise. We took advantage of the technological advances of the day, so we did most of our interaction online. Kathleen was not difficult to work with (I believe she thinks the same of me) so we were able to share our ideas with each other freely without ridicule. We got along fine and the assignment was a success.

  11. I want to lol at Nadja's comment, but I'm not sure that I can do that here on this blog. But I want to thank Nadja for being the best partner as well. We agreed that since we were both doing the course we will work together on the group project and it paid off. Our group dynamics couldn't be better. We listened to each other's suggestions, and put a lot of work into our poster.

I have to say that I learned a lot about Olive Senior by doing the research. It took a lot of reading to get even tiny nuggets of information to put into our poster, but that reading exposed us to a lot of her life and works that we would not ordinarily be exposed to.

I also have to agree with Shelly that I was glad that the poster allowed us to use creative skills when we are not ordinarily called upon to do so. Besides the Creative Writing courses, there are no ostensibly creative classes that we can take and I'm glad that Dr. Skeete pushed us into being creative.

So I would say yes, it was a worthwhile project even though it was daunting at first. I learned a lot from it.

I think that the objectives outlined in the assignment were achieved. As always, there are always moments when you reflect on things that could have been better executed. Oneka and I ran into some difficulties with regard to scheduling meeting times, but I do think that overall we produced a good poster. I enjoyed researching more on Zee Edgell, as I have not heard of her until this course. The most rewarding thing for me was looking at how her personal life influences her literature. I was amazed by the similarities between Edgell's own upbringing and that of Beka.

I believe that the objectives were achieved. My group member and I strayed from the core objectives of the assignment slightly, as Dr. Skeete pointed out, but essentially, we were still able to learn quite a lot about the author herself which gave great insight into to her work. Having the opportunity to study Shani Mootoo, especially in such a fun, creative and interactive way was helpful. It is always important to understand the author, and I believe that it is an aspect of literature that is often overlooked. Most courses focus on the work, but understanding the man or woman behind the work makes a huge difference. It is after all their emotion and background knowledge that goes into the creation of the text to begin with.

  14. Like other partners, I too believe that Devon and I were able to achieve the objectives and would like to thanks him for his "artistic flair". I think that we worked well together and that the pairing of two part-time working students helped in no small measure.
The assignment itself was quite beneficial in that we were able maximise output: we came away from the exercise with a better knowledge of all the authors rather than just focusing on maybe three in a course which is very intense as this one was.
I also heed Dr. Skeete's critical caution in not attempting to read too much of the author's background into the work produced but rather recognising the touch of certain influences.

  15. This assignment was different from anything I have done in my other course. I thought it was a good experience to use our imagination and creativity to learn and teach. Working with my partner, Nisa was a very enjoyable experience as we bought share a very similar taste in literature. We had to research Shani Mootoo and this was my first experience researching a Trinidadian female writer, which I must say instilled some pride me for Trinidad and Tobago. As expected there was a series of unfortunate events that led to Nisa and I having to present late, however this did nothing to curb my enthusiasm to present on my second favourite author in this course; the first being Zee Edgell.
